Organoclay Principles and Practices

PACS Course Number 154

6 PM to 9 PM

Knowing how to prevent fouling of activated carbons, membranes and ion exchange resins is an important tool to save operations costs for the end user, the one who pays the bills.

This course provides you the tools to use organoclays: what they are made of, how they work, their chemistry and how to select the best organoclay for your applications. There is more than one type in use, for different applications: The non-ionic one used to remove oil and sheen from water, and the polar ones to remove humic acids, THM's and chelates from water. Your cleanup success in an economically acceptable manner depends on an understanding of pre-polishers and post polishers. Organoclays are also used as post polishers for oil/water separators, DAF units and oil skimmers. Recycling of wastewater is becoming more prevalent in water starved areas, and organoclays can help achieve what those above mentioned units cannot, by them selves, non-detect status of oil.

Discussions of practical aspects on how to break emulsions and deal with the rising carbon prices (70-90%) due to the tarriffs imposed on Chinese carbon are included. Organoclays can help to offset those costs.
