October 12-13, 2010 will be the 26th International Activated Carbon Conference (IACC-26) and Activated Carbon School near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania USA international airport. IACC-26 will again bring beginners and veterans together to share knowledge and information to continue to grow the size and quality of the activated carbon (AC) industry. If AC is important to you, now or in the future, this is the conference and short courses you need to attend, to connect with experts to gain the knowledge you need to be successful.
Activated carbons are used in an amazing number of different ways. In a typical day AC supports your activities: coal burning electric power plants used powdered AC (PAC) to remove mercury and other toxicants from their emissions; municipal water plants used granular AC (GAC) to purify water for your household; a point-of-use AC filter was used to remove the last organic and inorganic traces from the municipal drinking water supply; the white granular sugar on the breakfast table was prepared by decolorizing raw colored sugars with GAC; the gold ring symbolizing marriage used GAC in the recovery process; fabrics and other construction materials around home used AC to comply with environmental regulations; the adhesive tapes on bandages and adhesive tapes used AC to recover and re-use volatile solvents used in the manufacturing process; the dry cleaning industry used AC to decrease emissions; the soft drinks and beverage industry used AC to purify and standardize water before beginning their processes; AC is used as a catalytic support because it has more surface area per volume than any other know material; AC is used in animal litter boxes to control odor; human sanitary products use AC to control odor; AC is used in ground to facilitate plant growth and carbon dioxide sequestration; AC is used to clean-up contaminants from river bottoms; it is used in kidney dialysis machines to purify blood. Many other AC applications exist, but you get the idea.
One page abstracts can be sent until August 31, 2010. The accepted technical presentations are posted on the PACS website for your review. A strong technical program is available already, but we want to provide all with more information, see accepted papers listed below.
The technical program is Tuesday and Wednesday, October 12-13, 2010, consisting of oral -, poster-, and abstract-only presentations. Oral sessions run 9 am to 5 pm daily. Two continental breakfasts at 7:30 am, breaks, lunches and dinner are provided to maximize conference attendee interactions. Poster authors materials are provided in the Conference Proceedings. This assures each conferee has the main points and contact information for the poster authors. Poster authors are available daily during the continental breakfast, breaks, lunch and evening meal.
Products and Service suppliers can purchase six foot vendor tables to display. Vendors may submit marketing sheets for the Conference Proceedings without attending. Conference Proceedings can be purchased after the conference is completed. Conference Proceedings include full contact information for each conferee for easy communications, abstracts of oral- poster-, and abstracts-only presentations.
Since AC users do not learn about this subject in their academic training the Activated Carbon School was started in 1985 as a way to help fill this information gap and connect users and manufacturers of AC. Relevant AC courses are provided three days before and three days after the two-day conference as options to conferees at additional costs. For the convenience of the global AC market, courses are provided monthly in major cities and at the clients time and place. Education is important to maximize the benefits offered by activated carbons.
There are 17 courses in the AC school. The most relevant and immediately useful course titles are:
If you have a technology to grow the size and quality of the activated carbon and related industries, let us know as we want to add courses to the Activated Carbon School.
Saturday, October 16th provides you opportunity to tour a benchmark activated carbon laboratory. Dr. Mick Greenbank provides his highly rated two-day course on Thursday and Friday, before the laboratory tour. Bill Engeleitner, P.E. provides his course "Agglomeration Technologies for Particle Enlargement" after the laboratory tour on Saturday morning.
There will be two awards for the Activated Carbon Hall of Fame at IACC-26. On Tuesday after lunch Dr. Timothy Golden of Air Products will provide a one-hour plenary lecture on "Current and Future Uses of Activated Carbon in the Industrial Gas Industry." On Wednesday Dr. Hugh McLaughlin will provide his plenary lecture "Activated Carbons as Soil Enhancement for Plant Growth and Climate Control" and a poster titled "Activated Carbon Facilitated Oxidation goes Commercial."
Information on the prestigious Hall of Fame awards is provided at www.pacslabs.com. Nominations are sought for the 2011 carbon conferences in Seattle, WA in April and Pittsburgh, PA in October 2011.
Each conference provides a Leadership Speaker program. It is designed to provide overall industry guidance and major new business opportunities. Before lunch on Tuesday Daniel Connell form Consol Energy will present the leadership talk titled "Carbon Capture and Sequestration: Progress, Challenges, and Opportunities."
You are invited to recommend Leadership Speakers and subjects for future conferences.
It is never too late to participate, but your early direct communications with conference organizers will help you to be get the most out of your participation. Updates will be at pacslabs.com website.
Products and service providers not able to attend the Conference can submit marketing sheets for the Conference Proceedings. All conference and short course attendees may submit marketing sheets for the Conference Proceedings at no extra cost. Conference mission is to connect the global activated carbon industry. There is a special section in the Conference Proceedings for these Products & Services suppliers.
